Terra cotta is Italian for "baked earth." It is created by partially drying clay, and then shaping it and fired before being covered with a sand to help it cool. Terra cotta has been popular throughout history for art and pottery and even for construction. The term terra cotta also refers to the an orangish brown color that the clay traditionally takes, a popular choice for everything from bakeware and cookware to the facade of the Natural History Museum in London.
